چکیده
BACKGROUND The use of percutaneous vertebroplasty (PV) to treat osteoporotic vertebral fractures is increasing. This investigation assesses the efficacy and safety of PV for refractory pain owing to osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures. METHODS A retrospective investigation of PV was conducted with a minimal of 1 year follow up. PV with polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) was performed on 75 patients with osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures that responded poorly to the conservative therapy. Patients were asked to quantify their degree of pain using Huskisson's visual analogue scale to assess the clinical results. RESULTS Eighty-seven vertebrae treated using PV in 70 patients were evaluated with a minimal of 1 year follow up. Pain, as assessed on the VAS, decreased from 80+/-16 mm before PV to 36+/-28 mm at 1 month after PV and 30+/-19 mm at the most recent follow up. The reduction in pain from the baseline to 1 month (p=0.031) and to final follow up (p=0.023) were both statistically significant. Sixty-two patients (85.5%) quickly returned to their pre-injury activity level and achieved better quality of life. CONCLUSIONS PV is effective in pain reduction for painful vertebral compression fractures. It provided significant pain relief. Skillful techniques and careful safeguards can minimize the risks of PMMA migration.

Kyphoplasty for the treatment of an atypical osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture of the lumbar spine: A case report
Vertebral augmentation is a minimally invasive but sometimes technically challenging intervention typically reserved for the treatment of older patients with painful vertebral compression fractures due to osteoporosis or neoplasms. We report the successful treatment of osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures of the first lumbar vertebral body (L1) using kyphoplasty in a paraplegic young pa...

BACKGROUND Vertebral augmentation has been widely used to treat vertebral body compression fractures caused by varied pathologies. The lifetime risk of a vertebral body compression fracture is 16% for women and 5% for men, and exponential increase of osteoporotic fractures worldwide. PURPOSE To determine the efficacy and durability of percutaneous vertebroplasty for the treatment of back pain...

SINCE the first description of vertebroplasty in 1987 for the treatment of aggressive hemangiomas (1), vertebroplasty has become established as a safe and effective, minimally invasive procedure that offers a therapeutic option for patients with back pain from osteoporotic or tumor-related fractures. This initial success has spawned additional techniques for percutaneous vertebral augmentation,...
متن کاملOsteoporotic vertebral compression fractures with an intravertebral cleft treated by percutaneous balloon kyphoplasty.
We investigated the safety and efficacy of treating osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures with an intravertebral cleft by balloon kyphoplasty. Our study included 27 patients who were treated in this way. The mean follow-up was 38.2 months (24 to 54). The anterior and middle heights of the vertebral body and the kyphotic angle were measured on standing lateral radiographs before surgery, ...

BACKGROUND Percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) and percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP) could give rise to excellent outcomes and significant improvements in pain, analgesic requirements, function, cost, and incidence of serious complications for thoracolumbar osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (VCFs). But some studies showed the recurrent fracture of a previously operated vertebra or adjacen...
متن کاملVenous extravasation and polymethylmethacrylate pulmonary embolism following fluoroscopy-guided percutaneous vertebroplasty
Percutaneous vertebroplasty has gained widespread popularity and demonstrated clinical efficacy in the treatment of spinal osteoporotic compression fractures and pathologic osteolytic lesions. Despite its rapid pain relief and safety, this minimally invasive intervention has exhibited some rare complications over the past decade. In this case study, we describe a patient with an uncommon compli...
